FAQs

  • Definitely. It might not make sense to have the history of your house researched if you are only the first or second resident, but apart from that, it honestly doesn’t matter how grand your house is - you just never know who lived there and what their stories might be. Every house I’ve researched so far, big or small, has had a fascinating past - I can’t imagine why yours would be any different. The case study on Amanda and Mike’s house is a perfect example, but so is the story of how Pier Avenue in Whitstable won a blue plaque.

  • The majority of my clients ask for a book that presents all the evidence I’ve found and tells the stories of the lives of the residents of their home or, if a family history, their ancestors. How much detail goes into these is done completely in negotiation with you and your budget.

The final written product does not have to be a full book though – for example, you might only want enough information for a pamphlet, a website page or even for a bid you are leading on. I’ve prepared all of these and much more, so am very happy producing something based on your precise need.

If you would prefer something to display, I also produce framed lists of residents or family trees, providing an elegant time line into the past lives of former residents or ancestors.

  • Definitely! I can be commissioned for as little or as much work as you like. I have a very reasonable daily rate and I’ve even undertaken commissions as small as a single day.

  • This usually depends on how much time you would like me to spend on the research. It is usually possible to go back to whenever your house was built, but the most in-depth analysis usually coincides with the last two hundred years as the records are much more numerous in this period.

  • Honestly, it really doesn’t have to be as pricey as you might imagine. I work on a daily rate and the vast majority of my clients commission me on this basis - so you decide in advance how many days of research and writing you would like and therefore how much you are prepared to pay.

The books I produce for clients are stunning bespoke products that only very few people own, so hopefully well worth the investment. The testimonials at the bottom of the home page might help you here.

  • Definitely. In fact, I kind of insist on it! That way we can discuss the different kinds of options available, and if you then wanted to go ahead, you can tell me about the things that matter most to you, including the questions you’ve always wanted answered.

  • Yes, please do contact me as this is something I also have lots of experience in.

  • Absolutely - as well as history I’ve got lots of writing experience in a whole range of areas, so I’m very used to not just doing the research but also writing it up in a very readable tone and style.

  • Absolutely - tell me how many words and what kind of style you’re looking for and we can go from there.

  • While most of my research is based in Britain, I have undertaken research on people from around the world, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany and South Africa.

  • Absolutely! This is something I have done with clients before and it can be really rewarding for both you and me.
